A HOPEFULL CONTRAST

2019-01-28

The French-German Cooperation Treaty, signed in Aachen/ Aix la Chapelle on 22 January 2019 by French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel is a hopefull contrast with the cynicism and opportunism of the British political leadership. I do not share the criticism of most comments on the treaty. In our current international environment, poisoned by Brexit, "America First", Russian meddling in elections, Chinese expansion and growing conflicts in the Middle-East, it needs courage and vision to re-affirm reconciliation as the primary foreign policy purpose. The Treaty, whatever its shortcomings, continues a much needed political approach initiated by Robert Schuman in 1950 and the Elysée Treaty in 1963 adopted by French President Charles de Gaulles and West-German Chasncellor Konrad Adenauer. The French version of the Treaty is annexed.

Neither Justice nor Order

Footprints of the 20th Century - Third Edition

Description

This fifth and final volume offers a critical assessment of the state of the law of nations. In the twenty first century the world needs true global law anchored in the dignity of the human person rather than weak international law built on the interests of major sovereign states.

Western Cooperation

Footprints of the 20th Century - Third Edition

Description

For the study of international relations, knowledge of the history of Western Cooperation in the Twentieth Century is essential. The third volume reviews the broader history from America’s entry in the First World War in 1917 and the start of the American Era in international relations one hundred years ago, to the inauguration of President Trump in 2017.
